Cohort 12

Kedar Hawkins

Before I started Green City Force, I was just coming off of a four month continuing education culinary program. I have a great passion for cooking and am trying to pursue a career in the field of culinary. As a father of a three year old growing up in the Brownsville developments, the only options we had to eat were chicken spots, Chinese, Spanish or deli store food. After further research and findings, I became aware of my eating habits and wanted to make a change, not just for me but for my family as well. Being with GCF allowed me to better my understanding about the environment and food justice. I obtained knowledge of urban agriculture, and now I understand the difference between locally grown food and food that’s shipped from state to state. I also expanded my networking, meeting and conversing with funders and future employers. My engagement with communities has increased, as far as me being able to converse with people and educate them on sustainable living. I’m proud to say that I’m a part of the movement that GCF promotes, and I would hope everyone feels the same way.
