NEW YORK (October 5, 2011) – U.S. Representative Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) chose Monday’s opening of Planters Grove, a Manhattan park made possible through a partnership of Green City Force (GCF), Planters, and the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), to announce the Civic Corps Jobs Act of 2011 that she will propose in Washington.

The bill, H.R. 3114, would provide job training and community service opportunities to disadvantaged young adults, with a focus on juvenile offenders.

“We’ve seen firsthand how initiatives like GCF enable young people to support their communities, while preparing them for productive careers,” said Congresswoman Velázquez on Monday.

“By targeting these same tools toward juvenile offenders who want to turn their lives around, we can help them get on a path to a brighter future.”

We are honored that Congresswoman Velázquez chose Green City Force’s event to announce this groundbreaking legislation, and admire her commitment to bring service and training opportunities to underserved juvenile offenders.
