By Maurice Davis, age 21, Manhattan

My name is Maurice Davis, a Spring 2011 GCF graduate, and I just got back from a wonderful experience in Washington, D.C. Accompanied by three GCF staff members, and along with five other Corps Members from across the country, I had the privilege of being honored as 2012 national Corps Member of the Year.

It was a real eye opener for me, being in the room where the “action” was, bearing witness to the work of Corps Network groups from across the country. As they exchanged information regarding National Service, I sat there and absorbed the whole experience. In fact, there was one point during my trip that I thought to myself, “How did I get here?” I thought what it took for me to get to this point, staring at the Washington Monument from the Lincoln Memorial. I started to think about the growth that I have achieved, and the Corps Members that I grew with for the past seven to eight months. I thought about the frustrating days working on the roofs, wanting to go home after lifting up buckets and sweating to the rays of the sun. I thought about my days on the EmPower team, trying to help tenants lower their electricity bill and yet they just persisted in being rude to my partners and me. But my spirit never broke and I never gave in. The motivation to keep going came from my support system, my fellow Corps Members.

For four days at the conference, I talked to many different people who represent The Corps Network all across the United States. I spoke in front of many people about my background and how much these past eight months meant to me. I learned so much from the experience — finding out more about the other Corps Members of the Year and attending workshops. Finally, on my last day in D.C., I had the great honor of meeting with U.S. Representative Nydia Velazquez.

I’m thankful to The Corps Network for even considering me, let alone choosing me, to be Corps Member of the Year. I would like to thank my fellow Corps Members who were the first ones rooting for me, and everyone at Green City Force for accepting me into your community and taking me on a life journey that I will always carry with me. Thank you.
