The Love Where You Live Cohort #13 began their GCF Orientation on November 7th in the second floor cafeteria of the Pfizer Building. This group of 50 young adults from the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP) NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments will spend 6 months in service to our country and city making NYCHA developments cleaner and greener across the five boroughs. While in service, the Corps Members will gain hands-on industry specific experience and go through rigorous technical and professional trainings as part of our Green City Academy. Jared Sessum, the new Love Where You Live Director welcomed the corps along with their Team Leaders and several other members of the GCF staff. The cohort went through two weeks of tone setting, education about the GCF culture, training and team building to get the group ready for service.

On November 14th, Paula Gavin, Chief Service Officer of NYC Service, and Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National Community Service (CNCS), swore in Cohort 13 at the launch of Service Year Alliance. Here, the Corps Members pledged to “get things done for America” as newly initiated AmeriCorps Members.

Cohort #13’s first day of service was on November 21st at Earth Matter Farm on Governors Island. There, the Corps Members assisted Co-founders Marisa and Charlie with their weekly compost windrow build, processing the tons of compost that GrowNYC delivers to the island from their Brooklyn Greenmarkets.

We caught up with Cohort #13 at the Queensbridge Community Resource fair. The Corps Members were busy spreading the word about GCF and NYCHA Recycles! the push to bring recycling facilities to every NYCHA development in the city. We look forward to celebrating their many accomplishments, in service and beyond.
