“Our problems are manmade; therefore they may be solved by man. No problem of human beings is beyond human destiny.”

-Cheryl Dorsey, President of Echoing Green, quoting JFK to advise Green City Force Graduates to stay active in fighting climate change and changing their lives.

On November 9th, Green City Force (GCF) celebrated the graduation of 19 corps members from its spring 2010 Clean Energy Corps. Following a successful pilot program, that engaged 10 young people between November 2009 and April 2010 in partnership with Community Environmental Center and Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, GCF recruited 24 young people in collaboration with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and partner referring agencies around the city to serve from May through October 2010.  Their service and training with Green City Force concluded with fanfare at a ceremony, graciously hosted by NYCHA in the beautiful Community Center at Ingersoll Houses, which gathered family and friends of corps members and staff, GCF volunteers, funders, partners and allies. An illustrious line-up of graduation speakers included two GCF graduates alongside nationally recognized leaders in city government, energy conservation, philanthropy and social entrepreneurship:  NYCHA Commissioner Margarita Lopez, Chief Service Officer Diahann Billings-Burford from NYC Service, Community Environmental Center founder and CEO Richard Cherry, Blue Ridge Foundation New York Executive Director Matthew Klein, and Echoing Green CEO Cheryl Dorsey. Four corps members were honored for outstanding performance:

  • Desiree Pabon received the Green City Force Sustainability Award, presented by Commissioner Margarita Lopez. Desiree has taken her experience with Green City Force to share her learning with others in her home community , the Betances Housing Development, and beyond.  Whether representing Green City Force at the Green City Challenge, making her voice heard at the PlaNYC community meeting, or pedaling hard at the Tour de Bronx, Desiree recognizes the value of the “global village” and the link she and her local community have in protecting our environment.
  • Jordan Temple received the Green City Force Corps Member Service Award, presented by Diahann Billings-Burford, for being dedicated to service within and beyond Green City Force activities. Jordan was one of the leaders in service hours until having to go fulfill his civic duties as a juror. He is the kind of guy whose major request for time off as a corps member was to go complete a service project to be completed in New Orleans, as a member of NY2NO. Jordan truly  takes the time to reflect and understand the impact of the work he and his fellow Corps members had on others.
  • Dejon Barnes received the Green City Force Leadership Award, presented by Matt Klein. Dejon led by example and was a model Corps member in his approach to getting the job done and staying focused on service, training and also supervising civic volunteers on several Cool Roof days.
  • Angelo Rivera, former consultant to Green City Force, presented the Educational Achievement Award to Shatia Campbell and Jarrett Rice for extraordinary improvements in remedial math and English. With the help of GCF’s extraordinary volunteer math tutor, Nathalie Westerfeld, and weekly vocabulary sessions reinforced throughout the week by GCF’s team leaders, made an improvement of 5 grade levels in math and nearly 2 in reading, while Jarrett improved by 3 grade point levels in both areas, over the course of the program.

Finally, Green City Force’s speech for the Appreciation Award, which Richard Cherry received on behalf of Community Environmental Center, can be seen here.
