“Green City Force is connecting the people that most need work to the work that most needs to be done.”

– Van Jones

On April 21st, Van Jones, a leader of the green movement and author of the #1 New York Times Best Seller Rebuild the Dream, invited Green City Force Corps Members to join him on the main stage of the NYC Green Festival. Watch the clip here and read the transcript below.

“Before I say anything, I want to make sure that we realize who the real heroes are. I want to make sure we realize who the true heroes and sheroes of the green economy are. They’re not people in my age group. It’s this next generation that’s coming up. I want you to get on your feet and give a round of applause to Green City Force, who is here – these are the young people who are doing the green jobs, who are retrofitting, who are weatherizing, who are saving Grandmama some money – come on, all of you!”

Green City Force Corps Members walk onto the main stage

“Go ahead and take a bow. These are the real heroes. We talk about green jobs, we talk about a green future – these are the people. And you see this? They’re just getting started. These are the real heroes.”

Corps Members receive a standing ovation, and exit the stage.

“I want you to know my friend Lisbeth Shepherd, who I was an Echoing Green fellow with three months ago. No, it was a long time ago. She is the person who came up with this idea – that in New York City, all these young people who have so much talent, so much promise, and so much desire to work – you know, there’s this myth now that young people don’t want to work. It’s not true. They want to work, but they want meaningful work. They don’t want meaningless work. They have enough self-esteem to know that they can do something more than just the most menial task. And they want to be a part of a bright future for themselves, and for the community.

And so you have all these young people who need work, and you have all this work that needs to be done. Green City Force is connecting the people that most need work to the work that most needs to be done. Give them another round of applause. I appreciate them for being here.”
