Since summer 2009, GCF and Community Environmental Center have partnered to bring the vision of GCF to reality. In honor of this fruitful partnership, GCF staff member Lucian Cohen presented the Appreciation Award to Rick Cherry, President and CEO of CEC.

The text of the speech prior in honor of CEC:

“Tonight we wish to recognize Rick Cherry and CEC for their role in supporting the development of Green City Force. In 2009, Lisbeth contacted Rick to discuss her idea for creating a city-wide Clean Energy Corps to engage urban youth in service and training around building performance and energy efficiency.

Over the past year and a half, Rick and the staff of CEC, with its affiliate organizations Solar One and Build it Green, have been closely involved in bringing this idea to life with us, from program design to funding and, of course, to implementation. CEC staff model the green career paths our corps members can aspire to. CEC has provided GCF with service opportunities that allow our corps members to gain experience in the field while making an important contribution to the environment. CEC staff have been involved in helping to train and oversee our corps members, and CEC has hired GCF graduates into paid internship positions. As a GCF board member, Rick has been committed to helping GCF to grow into a full-fledged, city-wide corps with multiple partnerships like the one we have with CEC.  It’s an extraordinary partnership that has been only possible thanks to Rick’s leadership AND the real dedication of CEC directors and staff at every level of the organization. We would like to thank all the people at CEC who make our work possible: Olga Souto and her team: Clarence Shack, Nereida Velez, and Donna Parris; Leroy Anthony and the Weatherization Crews; Thelma Arceo and Paul Chang; Kathy Careddu and Gwen McLaughlin; Alexis Greene; Ken Daniels, Meir Biniashvili, Claire Hamilton and the wonderful financial department; Larina Barbieri, and Jay Ackley; and at Build it Green, Justin and the whole Cool Roofs team, in particular: Cara, Cammi, Loretta, and Anton. We also respectfully honor the memory of Aubrey Edwards.”
