GCF Graduates 22 Winter 2012 Clean Energy Corps Members

GCF celebrated its third Graduation Ceremony on June 29th, honoring 22 Corps Members for completing six months of intensive service, training, and academics.

At an afternoon event hosted by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) in Manhattan’s Federal Building, Corps Members shared the podium with national and city leaders and philanthropists.

Matt Nimetz, co-chair, and John Rhea, Chairman of NYCHA, honored GCF with opening remarks. Recognizing the power of partnership and all those who helped Green City Force come into fruition, Chairman Rhea thanked the graduates for their service to NYCHA:“You have become a powerful source in your own right for good in our communities, and for that I personally thank you.”

Keynote Speaker Asim Mishra, Acting Chief of Staff for the Corporation of National and Community Service

“These past 6 months, you have made community impact, you have shifted the odds in your favor for success in the future,” said keynote speaker Asim Mishra, Acting Chief of Staff for the Corporation of National and Community Service, to graduating Corps Members, “and you have joined a special family of leaders across the nation that use service and better their communities and better themselves.” Mishra hailed Green City Force as an example of “AmeriCorps at its best” and announced a major grant through the Corporation for National and Community Service that will allow GCF to grow its corps and impact over the next three years.

Partners joined staff members in recognizing Corps Members’ accomplishments and six Corps Members who received special awards. Rory Christian, Director of NYCHA’s Energy Department congratulated Ty’Keisha Youmans, who received an award for Sustainability; Peter Hong, Vice President and Treasurer of Alcoa, awarded Melinda Ruiz for Integrity; Kevin Cummings, Director of NYC Civic Corps awarded Joshua Edwards for Outstanding Service; Lisbeth Shepherd, Founder and Executive Director of Green City Force, awarded Ellizier Villanueva for Leadership, and Rick Cherry, President and CEO of the Community Environmental Center awarded Olin Witt the Force Award, for upholding the core values integral to GCF.

“Green City Force gave me a chance to show that despite all the things I don’t have, what I do have is potential,” said Corps Member Tysheen Fahie, chosen by his peers to speak at the event.“Today myself and my fellow graduates are better people, because we were held to high expectation and we have shown that we can achieve them… we will continue to lead socially and environmentally responsible lives.”
