As our latest graduating cohort repeatedly demonstrated these last six months, the force is strong at GCF!

On November 17th, Green City Force (GCF) Corps Members, alumni, staff, partners, donors, family and friends came together at the Building Energy Exchange in lower Manhattan to celebrate the achievements of our 10th graduating Energy Corps. This corps raised the bar for Green City Force, with 100% of the 13 member team graduating!

During their six-month service term, the Cohort 10 Energy Corps educated more than 2,934 New York City public housing residents on simple ways to conserve energy and water at home, and installed more than 2,300 energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) as part of GCF’s Love Where You Live Challenge.

The team also helped construct and steward urban farms, gardens and parks throughout NYC. In addition to their service activities, Corps Members earned the GPRO Green Building Fundamentals certification and completed training in Building Science Principles and rooftop solar installation.

At the graduation ceremony, Senior Team Leader Lawrence Harris was presented with the “Force Award”, bestowed on an individual who most embodies the values of Green City Force. Graduating Corps Member Brazil Malik, who completed over 1,000 service hours during his six-month AmeriCorps service term (the requirement is 900 hours), also received the Force Award, as well as the Certificate for Most Service Hours completed. Brazil was chosen as the speaker representing his cohort.

This cohort, GCF presented a new award as well, the Peace Maker Award, presented to Corps Member William Gregory. The Peace Maker Award is given in memory of Kiara Harris, beloved daughter of GCF Senior Team Leader Lawrence Harris. The award honors the Corps Member who most embodies her dedication to bringing people together and helping to promote peaceful relations and interactions. During his service term, William demonstrated himself as a person who was always calm, unbiased, and optimistic, and gave positive influences to his team and others around him. A complete list of this cohort’s award recipients is below.
