On Tuesday, November 14th 2017, 7 members from the Urban Farm Corps were invited to the Environmental Advocates Awards Dinner hosted at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan. Environmental Advocacy is defined as protecting the public from environmental hazards, and protecting the natural world.  Cohort members were able to meet and mingle with influential people who range from Environmental Lawyers to the head of the Environmental Advocacy Board President. We were met with a beautiful, and also intimidating entrance. It was far away from the wood chips we see everyday, and we were able to share our stories of being the next generation of Urban Farmers with people who have dedicated their lives to the environment. This was a great opportunity to put to test our networking skills that we’ve been learning and practicing every Tuesday at Green City Academy.  This year the two honorees are Irvine D. Flinn and Gina McCarthy.  Irvine D. Flinn is a real estate lawyer who dedicates much of his time to public policy advocacy. He works to protect open space while also safeguarding water against threats against PCB’s (carbon, nitrogen, and chlorine) sewer overflows, and oil spills.

Gina McCarthy spent 35 years as a public servant focused on environmental protection and public health. Her speech this night was to give hope to her fellow advocates that although the country is facing tough times, we must presevere to defend our earth, and everything it gives us. Her resume includes advocating for the Clean Water Rule Policy, finalizing Clean Power Plan , serving as a fellow at the Government Institute of Politics. While hearing her talk about the difficulties we face ahead, everyone seemed to be ready and focused on overcoming any issues as long as she was in the forefront leading the way. Green City Force never fails in providing its cohort members the opportunity to experience what it is like to be surrounded by people and organizations that believe so deeply in the environment. I believe my fellow cohort members will remember this dinner when thinking about what their next move is.

Thank You to Lisbeth and Jen for making this journey a dream come true, and providing opportunities such as this one possible for a regular girl from the Bronx.

The Corps Members and staff of the Urban Farm Corps attended this event as private citizens.
