This past Thursday Green City Force welcomed another wonderful group of graduates to our Alumni Network. After 6 months of work-like experience through service projects, Cohort 11, our latest Clean Energy Corps is moving on to greater and greener things. With these 34 Corps Members GCF now celebrates a graduate community that is over 300 alumni strong.

The day was full of great speakers who offered Green City Force graduates words of wisdom, well wishes, and recalled warm memories from a service term well spent. Our deep appreciation goes out to GCF partner NYCHA for offering to host the celebration for Corps Members and their families at their offices down on Church Street. The GCF community was lucky to see the personal connection that NYCHA Chair Shola Olatoye has with our organization and our Corps Members when she named us “truly one of my favorite organizations.” Chair Olatoye lauded this Cohort’s graduates for setting positive examples and exemplifying that “You can choose to change your life, and can inspire others to do the same through service.” For our ongoing partnership with NYCHA and Chair Olatoye’s unending support we granted her our highest honor, The Force Award. A full list of award recipients is at the bottom of this post.

While our partners and supporters offered great sentiments, it was the remarks from the graduating Corps Members themselves that got the audience to its feet. Keith Ford, aspiring architect from the Van Dyke Houses in Brooklyn, reminded us in spirited words of the personal growth of each Corps Member in the program, “Everyone in this room has grown into mighty oak trees…You all will continue to grow until you touch the sky.” He also left the salient reminder, “We’ve done this as a team, I really think that’s the most important thing.”

Graduate Emonni Cropper, from Butler Houses in the Bronx, drove home the point that GCF is about more than service and professional preparation, it’s about creating a nurturing community that promotes personal development. Having entered the program admittedly more reserved, now Emonni says “I’m breaking free of my shell and I have found my voice.” For Emonni, “GCF was the change I needed to fly and spread my wings.”

These empowering reflections are just a taste of the vibrant energy and celebration on display on the 28th. Stay tuned on our blog for more from the ceremony as we release full speech texts from Corps Members over the next few weeks.

While we’re sad to see Corps Members depart, Mara Cerezo, GCF Director of Career and Alumni services said it best, “Commencement, I like that word because it’s the start, the beginning, the launch.” True to those words, this is the beginning of graduates’ longest relationship with GCF, that of alumni. We are always here for you, because as Mara said, “We are your partners on your career journey.”
