On October 22nd, Green City Force Corps Members braved the wind and the rain to host the first annual Bay View Houses Farm Harvest Festival! GCF’s local partner East New York Farms helped run the show with Farm Manager Tirrell Alford and their Youth Interns. 55 adults and nearly one hundred children turned out to join the festivities despite the rain. Before we knew it, dozens of pumpkins had gone from the pumpkin patch to the carving table.

GCF was thrilled to be joined again by DJ Smoove, who kept the celebrations going all morning. Corps Members Ayanna Bynum and Kedar Hawkins kept the skillet hot while they dished out order after order of farm fresh samples. GCF Chief Development Officer Tonya Gayle taught everyone how to make Chex mix. Youth Interns from the Wycoff House Farm volunteered to help run events and even brought out an antique apple cider press from their farm.

Staffer Joi Rowe and Corps Member Shantelay Galbrieth were busy painting faces all day, as more than a few cats could confirm. Ellen McCarthy from NYCHA and Corps Member Nalijha Trammel ran the craft table where kids made their own Halloween masks.

The pumpkin patch was a hit! Team Leaders Renee Whittick and Aram Marcel served as pumpkin patrol, while GCF’s Executive Director Lisbeth Shepherd was the master carver. Urban Agriculture Director Jen Tirado MC’ed the event, with raffle drawings happing throughout the morning. A special thanks to GCF Alumni and Empower Apprentices Keith Ford and Jonathan Cabrera for helping to staff the event and taking some fantastic photos. And thank you to Bay View Houses for a wonderful first season at the Bay View Houses Farm!
