On September 29th, Mayor De Blasio announced the launch of Building Healthy Communities (BHC), a city-wide initiative of the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Partnerships designed to improve health outcomes for residents in 12 chronically underserved neighborhoods across the city. The initiative includes Green City Force’s work to construct and operate urban farms on NYCHA property that will increase public housing residents’ access to fresh produce. This initiative, a partnership between the Mayor’s Office, The Fund for Public Health in New York City, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and Green City Force (GCF), had Corps Members in high gear all summer, building new farms at three NYCHA properties in Brooklyn and Manhattan: Howard Houses in Brownsville, Bay View Houses in Canarsie, and Wagner Houses in East Harlem. We are excited to announce that as of October 8th, all three new farms have officially begun distributing fresh produce to local NYCHA residents. New York One News came out to Bay View Houses Farm on September 29th to check out the action for the BHC launch, and ask our Corps Members about their work at our largest (2 acre) farm! Click here to watch the full story.

The Farms at NYCHA are made possible in partnership with the Fund for Public Health in NYC with support from The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, The New York Community Trust, Target, Unilever, The Merck Family Fund, The Scherman FoundationALLINBKLYN, The Brooklyn Community Foundation, The New York City Council, and an anonymous donor. Additional support for GCF’s role of the initiative comes from The Corps Network, and the NYS Department for Environmental Conservation. Click here for a full list of our partners and funders.
