Welcome to Green City Force!

Green City Force is an AmeriCorps program that engages young adults from low income communities in national service related to the environment. In doing so, we prepare them for sustainable careers, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building the green city we want to see.

Since our founding in 2009, we have engaged over 400 18-24 year old residents of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) in our signature Clean Energy Corps program.

In May 2013, Green City Force was recognized by Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg as New York City’s Most Innovative Nonprofit, under the first Innovation Awards administered by the NYC Center for Economic Opportunity. In September 2013, Executive Director Lisbeth Shepherd was recognized as a White House Youth Jobs+ Champion of Change.

Serve your community. Break the cycle of poverty. Learn more about joining our corps.

GCF has become a national model: it is demonstrating how underemployed and unemployed young adults in urban communities can acquire practical skills, so they can find jobs and establish careers in the emerging green marketplace. By supporting GCF, we are supporting the greatest resource this country has—its young people—and it is these young people... who will then help us transform this economy into a green economy.

Our Corps members say...

I truly believe that if not for Green City Force I would not have the confidence and knowledge that I have gained here. Our work makes a difference in a time that is full of non-green methods that are destroying the world we live in.
